Calù: The Multi-Purpose Mini Desk

A Versatile Solution for Modern Lifestyles

Calù, designed by Clarissa Concilio, is a unique and innovative mini desk that caters to the needs of individuals who require a compact and functional workspace. With its modular design and easy disassembly, Calù offers convenience and flexibility for those who are constantly on the move.

Calù was inspired by the study of the needs of individuals who lack the time or space to sit at a traditional desk or table. The designer aimed to create a versatile object that could be easily disassembled and placed anywhere without taking up excessive space. The result is a mini desk that combines functionality, comfort, and intuitive design.

One of the standout features of Calù is its modular composition. It consists of essential elements such as glass and mouse supports, as well as a unique "C" vertical element that prevents items from sliding off the table. The mobile support is completely dismantled, with the legs and vertical element connected to the table via joints. Additionally, the two appendices for mouse and drinks are retractable, allowing the table to transform into a single corpus when everything is reinserted.

The materials used in the construction of Calù were carefully chosen to enhance its aesthetic appeal. The body of the desk is made from white plastic laminate, while the legs, supports, and "C" vertical element are crafted from cedar wood. The bending technique used to create the legs adds a touch of elegance to the design.

Calù offers a range of functionalities, serving as both a table for meals and a support for working on a computer. The "C" vertical element ensures that nothing slips off the table, but can also be removed if desired. The desk can be completely dismantled, making it easy to store and transport, and allowing it to fit into even the smallest of spaces.

The Calù project began in August 2015 in Bologna and was completed in October 2015 in Milan. It was initially created for the Trentino Design 3.0 competition, where it showcased its innovative design and practicality.

Calù is a testament to the designer's extensive research into the needs and behaviors of individuals who require a compact and versatile workspace. Through online surveys and behavioral research, Clarissa Concilio identified the demand for an object that is easy to use, store, and can be utilized on various surfaces such as sofas and beds. The "C" vertical element was specifically designed to ensure that everything remains inside the table, even on rough surfaces.

The creative challenge in designing Calù was to create a table consisting solely of interlocking elements while maintaining a simple and clean aesthetic. The use of interlocking joints and the bending of the wood were the primary technical challenges overcome during the design process.

Calù has received recognition for its exceptional design and functionality. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2016. This prestigious award is given to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.

Calù is a testament to the power of innovative design in meeting the needs of modern lifestyles. Its compact size, modular composition, and elegant aesthetics make it the perfect solution for individuals seeking a versatile and stylish workspace.
